Achieving Nirvana

Om shanti everyone!

I know I just wrote a fashion post yesterday but I had to write about what happened to me this afternoon. Get this, I'm walking through the cosmetic counters in the Soho Bloomingdales when I passed Giorgio Armani and his entourage leaving the store. I almost hyperventilated as he was about five inches away from me. I mean I brushed his arm as I walked by!!!!! I have achieved fashion nirvana. I can die a happy woman now.

Armani is a fashion icon. I covet his clothes. Well, let's face it, I covet a lot of designers clothes, but his are always understated and classic. You could probably wear an Armani dress from twenty years ago and it would look like he made it yesterday, that's how classic his clothes are. And I saw him today! I almost genuflected when he passed by. I would have spoken to him but I didn' t know what to say, plus he only speaks an Italian and I'm sure his bodyguards would have wrestled me to the ground.

Having seen one of the major fashion icons of the 20th and 21st century, I proceeded upstairs where I bought a great BCBG dress and found the perfect "I'm going to the RITAs in Atlanta even though I'm nominated because I'm not published, but one day I will be, and don't I look fabulous' dress. It's Nicole Miller, a gorgeous shade of red, and would look wonderful with a pair of strappy gold sandals. Unfortunately it's half my rent, so I'll have to wait until it's on sale and hope they have my size.

I'm at work right now where I'll be until the wee hours of the morning.

Have a great weekend and enjoy the beautiful weather.

Until next week!

My love of Diane Von Furstenberg

It's been a very long week made worse by my total fuck-ups on Wednesday night at work. I took the word of my co-writer that we were good to go home instead of approaching the editor myself (never a smart idea), and I forgot to remove a question so it looked like I was missing one. Not good, not good. I got a missive from the Managing Editor, which is never a good thing, so I have to be extra careful tonight with the questions I write for the Daytime Emmy's.

My great niece (yes, I have a great niece, my sister is 20 years older than me, and my niece is a year and a half older than me) is turning 18 this month and graduating from high school. God, I feel old.

Thank God for Diane von Furstenberg. When I put on one of her dresses, I feel gorgeous and sexy. I have never failed to turn heads when I wear one of her wrap dresses. Unfortunately they cost a fortune and I can only afford them when I go to one of her sample sales. Unfortunately the last few sales, there have been slim pickings.

I wore one of her dresses in London, and had an usual experience. I figured London was safe, so I wore my olive green leopard print DVF dress. I felt sexy and confident and it must have showed.

First at afternoon tea at The Waldorf, the waiter presented me with a tray laden without 10 small desserts. When I asked why, he told me that the chef asked if I was pretty and the waiter told him yes, so the chef decided I deserved some extra treats. Then on my way to the theatre, a waiter came out of an Indian restaurant, and chased me up Charing Cross Road, and into a bookstore where I tried to hide. That's the power of the DVF dress, it makes you very popular with waitstaff.

Now, I've discovered that DVF has an outlet at Woodbury Common.

Gulp!

Celebrity Excess

I had a really great post yesterday about Mary J. Bliges's comments about her 'god' that were absolutely priceless, but blogger first posted it 3 times and then after I deleted two of them, it was still posting it 3 times, so I deleted it. Basically, Mary claims that god wants her to wear bling and to look hot, that he tells her that he wants her to be the hottest thing around.

Wow, it's nice to know that God is so concerned about how Mary looks instead of you know, fixing the environment, stopping the genocides that are going on in Africa and Bosnia, and smiting Osaman bin Laden.

Do celebrities ever listen to themselves or do they just blather on without a censor button?

This has not been a good week to be a celebrity. Maury Povich is being sued for sexual harassment, Snoop Dogg was detained at London airport, Julia Roberts got creamed for her Broadway debut although I give her props for having the courage to try something new. It has to be hard when you've been on the top of the heap for so long. What do you do next?

Alec Baldwin's behavior was so heinous during the run of Entertaining Mr. Sloane that his co-star not only quit, but is filing charges with the actors union. Alec's response was that 'only her doctor knows why she's been unhappy.' Is this guy for real? You don't file charges with the union unless you've been pushed to the wall, and I love the Roundabout Theatre's response which was basically covering their butts because starts like Baldwin are what keep them operating. This is despite the fact that Baldwin has on numerous occasions revealed what an ass he is (and the apple doesn't fall far in the Baldwin family tree considering his brothers Stephen and Daniel).

Denise Richards has been seen canoodling with her best friends ex-husband. How do you do that? Heather Locklear and Richie Sambora just split up. Aren't there any other single men in Hollywood that Denise can date? Come on, Ryan Seacrest is available, as is Carson Daly for starters. Even if Heather is okay with it, it's still weird. It's like having your mother go out with one of your ex-boyfriends (which actually happened to someone I know).

Brittany is pregnant again supposedly. Why? Didn't she learn anything from Shar Jackson? Just because you have his kids doesn't mean he's a good person or a good father. Girlfriend needs to get her act together before she brings another child into this world.

And the Harvard student author who claimed that she unconsciously channeled Megan McCaffery's words? Honey, one passage is unconscious, 40 is out and out plagiarism. I worry about this all the time, and I read alot. It's gotten to the point where if I even think something in one of my manuscripts is too similar to something I've read, I'll change it or rewrite because the last thing I want is to be accused of plagiarism. Now people are pointing the finger at Alloy Entertainment, the co-owners of the copyright on the book, asking what did they know and when did they know it.

Any celebrity excesses out there that you think are particularly egregious? Or who do you think really needs a good smackdown?

Harlem on my mind

I live in Harlem, home of the Apollo Theatre, the Harlem Renaissance, Sylvia's and Bill Clinton. I've always lived here, apart from college in Syracuse, and when I lived in London. Recently there's been a lot of talk in the media about the how Harlem has now become a popular place to move too, primarily because the area is filled with gorgeous brownstones that are half of what they would cost if you lived below 96th Street.

Which would have been great news if my father and uncle hadn't sold my grandmother's house on 144th Street and Convent Avenue. It's the one thing my mother never let my father forget. This house was gorgeous, 4 stories with a back garden where my grandmother grew roses and tomatoes. I have so many pictures of the two of us by the roses. It's one of the reasons that I don't like hot house roses. When you've grown up with rose bushes, it's just not the same thing.

Anywhoo, that house would now be worth around $4MM. I can just imagine my mother berating my father once again before she heads off to have a martini with Telly Savalas (my mother's big crush).

On the blog A Bagel in Harlem, a recent poster was berating and bemoaning all the white people who have moved in the neighborhood, claiming that they're ruining it by driving up real estate prices, and making it increasingly difficult for the long time residents who have lived in the neighborhood for years. I have only one thing to say to that. Yeah white people! It's finally encouraged builders to start creating more housing both upper and middle class in the neighborhood.

Let's get real. The black elite are not moving to Harlem. You don't Sean Combs, Russell Simmons, Spike Lee or Chris Rock moving to Harlem. None of them are buying brownstones on Strivers Row. Now they all live either in New Jersey or the Upper East Side or Soho. Even Samuel L. Jackson who lived in a brownstone across the street from my building decamped to LA, and he's certainly not buying a pied a terre in Harlem. Who does business in Harlem? Bill Clinton, that's who. I don't see any of these guys buying up real estate and putting up middle-class housing so that Harlem can stay black and Latino.

After all, Harlem was originally designed for the white middle class. Unfortunately during the depression of 1893, no one was buying all the way uptown, apart from middle class blacks who were moving out of the Tenderloin and the other areas where they were segregated. So Harlem became black.

So if Marcia Gay Harden and Cameron Mathison want to buy brownstones near Mt. Morris Park, I say more power to them.

I certainly plan to stay for awhile. After all where else in Manhattan, am I going to find a six room apartment for what I pay in maintenance?

Thanks for stopping by!

Yikes, Writer Overloaded

I just sent an email to a friend this morning detailing my schedule for the next two weeks, and it frightened even me. Here it is just to give you an idea:

Monday: Picking up credentials at Tribeca Film Fest.
Tuesday: Tribeca Film Fest.
Wednesday: IAG
Thursday: Drinkies with Lucy and the girls
Friday: IAG
Saturday: IAG
Sunday: Tribeca Film Fest.
Monday: Tribeca Film Fest.
Tuesday: IAG
Wednesday: Empire State Building lecture and reception at Museum of City of New York
Thursday: IAG
Friday: Swann Galleries for Modernist Poster reception (seeing Auction Guy)
Saturday: Afternoon Tea at Lady Mendl's and Tribeca Film Fest.
Sunday: IAG

It's no wonder I haven't found a guy. When would I have time to schedule him in?

So I've decided to declare that in May, I went attend at least two functions where I can meet eligible men, whether it be a Lock & Key party, a social event, or a speed dating fuction. I actually like Speed dating events because that way at least you have volume. Even though you're meeting like ten guys for eight minutes, you can pretty much sense within that time if you want to get to know that person on an extended basis. I'm all for quantity vs. quality.

Over at Pub Rant, agent Kristin Nelson was extolling her skills as a matchmaker, and I'm here to say hook me up Kristin! Unfortunately Daniel Lazar, the agent whe was talking about, was probably born after the Bicentennial and that's a little too young for even me. Let Demi marry a guy born after that. Me, I would prefer a guy born in the late sixties, but I'm willing to stretch to the early seventies, at least that way we have a few cultural references in common.

Thanks for stopping by.

Raindrops keep falling on my head

It's been raining cats and dogs today. Has anyone wondered what the origin of that phrase is? Can you imagine actual cats and dogs falling from the sky? It's just weird. Anyway, it's been nasty and filthy all day, the type of day where you just want to curl up at home, under the covers, with a cup of tea and a good book. I've been pretending that I'm in London all day to make it more palatable.

Despite the fact that it was pouring, I ventured out today to go see a mutual friend perform her cabaret act. It was actually a cabaret brunch which was so cool. Nothing like drinking mimosas and having a delicious omelet and then seeing someone perform. And Cynthia Crane (the performer) is divine.

I envy singers. I think that's why I watch American Idol. Despite the fact that I have a modicum of talent singing (apparently I have a 3 1/2 octave range and one of my voice teachers thought I had the makings of a coloratura soprano), singing in public has always frightened me. I would love to be able to stand up in front of a group of people and sing my heart out. That's a fear I'm hoping to face at some point in my life, but for right now, I have nothing but respect for anyone who picks up a mike whether it's at a kareoke night or at an audition.

And Cynthia is fantastic. The reason being, she understands what she's singing. She has an uncanny ability to not just sing the song, but also to act them out. That's the biggest problem I have with American Idol with some of the younger singers, they don't have a clue. There's no way that an ingenue like Kellie Pickler has the life experience to really sing a song like Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered from Pal Joey.

It's the same principle with writing. If you don't believe what you're writing, body mind and soul it's just going to sit there on the page. You have to pour your blood sweat and tears into your writing just the way you do with a song.

God, I'm being really deep today.

Thanks for taking the journey with me.

EKM

If you can't connect with the lyrics, why are you singing the song?

Friday Quiz: Which Tarot Card Are You?

I have a chapter and a half to finish on my WIP partial in order to submit to the agent that requested it and another partial, so forgive me if I resort to that old standby, the blog quiz.

Which Tarot Card Are You?

You are the Empress card. The Empress is the archetype of the Mother. She creates and nurtures life. She represents the abundance of Mother Earth. The Empress is capable of using nature in a productive way. She espouses art for art's sake. Her planet is Venus, and she embodies love of beauty and a strong value system. Here is also found initial sensation. This is the first really physical experience of the world that The Fool has entered. The Empress has a rich understanding of the world based on her five senses. In a reading, The Empress represents pregnancy, actual or metaphorical. She indicates an act of creation and a sensual experience of beauty. The Empress is a nurturing force that wishes to see the product of her experiences reach the next stage of development. The Glamourous Life

So I'm going to National this summer in Atlanta and I need a dress to wear to the RITA/Golden Heart ceremony on the last night. Now even though I'm not nominated, I love any chance to dress up, so right now I'm looking for a dress instead of waiting until the last minute and running up to Loehmann's. It's worked for me in the past, but I thought I'd try something different this year.

Now this dress to the right, is a little too fancy for the RITA's, but isn't it to die for? It's Badgley Mischka, the designers who do alot of red carpet events in Hollyweird.

I love it because it's very old Hollywood glamour. I can just imagine Rita Hayworth or Linda Darnell wearing this baby to the Academy Awards ceremony back in the days when it was held at the Hotel Roosevelt.

If I were still a member of The Players Club (a private club for members and friends of the industry) I would definitely be wearing this to a Pipe Night or Founders Night. Heck, if I could find anyone who would want to marry me, I would wear this to my engagement party. Or anyone's engagement party for that matter, so invite me, please!

Sigh!

Thanks for reading,

EKM

P.S. Thank god Ace was finally given the boot on American Idol, but what crack are the producers smoking? Andrea Bocelli? Singing world's greatest love songs? Oy!

Wednesday is Hump Day

Wow, that sounds unbelievably dirty doesn't it? What I meant to say is that Wednesday is the middle of the week, the hump day before we speed towards Friday and the weekend, which for me will be unbelievably busy.

Last night I had to leave work because of a mild case of food poisoning. Ironically, I'd gone to this dumpling place for weeks now, and never had a problem, but for some reason last night they didn't go down quite as well. I hated leaving work, but I don't think I could have sat there during Leno worrying about how soon it would be before I have to hurl again. Sometimes, you just have to take care of yourself and not worry so much about being a nice girl. I managed to make it through my first assignment, writing questions for Hope and Faith. Hey maybe that's what made me sick! God what a wretched show.

Good news though, one of the agents that I queried wants the first 75 pages of my YA and she sounded really keen on the idea, which was great. I'm even wondering if I can work this whole Shakespearian thing into more books. The whole cross-dressing thing might be a problem though, so I might have to stick to stories like Taming, and Much Ado.

I've also decided I need to get out more, so that I can stop obsessing over Auction guy. Clearly the more men I meet, the more options I will have. So it's on to sign up for speed dating, Single Gourmet, and other social events. There's nothing worse than finding one half-way decent guy, you just want to glom onto him like a life raft. However, the tarot card reading that I had back in February told me not to settle for just any relationship, no matter how desperate and horny I am!

Thanks for reading!

Monday Morning Review: Anybody Out There by Marian Keyes

I belong to Harper Collin's First Look program, a new program that allows readers the opportunity to review new books before they come out. After many attempts, I finally was given the opportunity to review the latest book by one of my favorite authors, Marian Keyes.

I picked up Lucy Sullivan's Getting Married a few years ago when I was on vacation in London, and loved it. Since then I have read every single one of her books, but my favorites are her books about the Walsh sisters. Anybody Out There is the story of the 4th sister, Anna Walsh.

Life is perfect for Anna Walsh. She has the "Best Job in the World" as a PR exec for a top-selling urban beauty brand, a lovely apartment in New York, and a perfect husband -- the love of her life, Aidan Maddox. Until the morning she wakes up in her mammy's living room in Dublin with stitches in her face, a dislocated knee, and completely smashed-up hands -- and no memory of how she got there. While her mammy plays nursemaid (just like all of her favorite nurses on her soaps), and her sister Helen sits in wet hedges doing her private investigator work for Lucky Star PI, Anna tries to get better and keeps wondering why Aidan won't return her phone calls or e-mails.

Recuperating from her injuries, a mystified Anna returns to Manhattan. Slowly beginning to remember what happened, she sets off on a search to find Aidan -- a hilarious quest involving lilies (she can't stop smelling them), psychics, mediums, and anyone in the city who can promise her a reunion with her beloved.

I really enjoyed this book despite the fact that I pretty much figured it out at the beginning of the book. Anyone who has ever suffered a loss can related to Anna's sense of denial. Also the need to want to contact the person you lost for closure, particularly if they've been taken from you suddenly or violently. With the proliferation of shows like Medium, The Ghost Whisperer, and John Edward's show on the Sci-Fi channel, there is a hunger to try to connect with those you have left us.

Anna is a great character, she never felt self-pitying to me, which would have been an easy trap to fall into. You root for her to find some measure of happiness by the end of the book. The only quibble I have is that even though the book is set in New York, it doesn't feel like. The settings are pretty generic. There's a scene where Anna is walking down 42nd Street, and it didn't seem familiar considering how much new construction is going on in the city.

What I love about Marian Keyes' books is her ability to write about what in other hands would be incredibly dark and depressing stories, with humor and wit. Watermelon about the oldest Walsh sister is about a woman whose husband leaves her the day after she gives birth to their first child. Rachel's Holiday is about Rachel Walsh who needs to finally get a grip on her addiction to cocaine. One of the interesting hallmarks of her writing is how she slowly reveals the story. Her characters can be deluded and clueless, and as they make the realization about their lives, it's revealed to us as well.

The other thing I love is that her books are long but they don't feel long. Anybody Out There clocks in at 464 pages. Wow, that's alot when the average chick-lit book is usually no more than 350.

If you haven't read any of her books, I'd start with Watermelon.

Spring Fever

Well the weather here in New York today was phenomenal but I think it's affecting people adversely. For example, I was in the library today, and a guy came up to me and not only did he tell me that I was very beautiful but he asked me if I was a model.

I asked him if he was blind! I mean I'm a little vertically challenged to be a model not to mention I'm older than the hills. But I was very flattered by the attention. He gave me his number but I'm not going to call him, for one thing, it was a totally cheesy line, 2) I have a feeling he's running some kind of scam since he kept telling me that he could get me into modeling. Still it was a nice feeling to know that I still have it whatever 'it' is.

Also, it turns out that Auction guy doesn't have a girlfriend, and is quite single. However he still has an entourage of women, and I'm not sure I want to start trying to cull him from the herd. I can just add him to the list of men I have a crush on including Bob Mayer of Jenny Crusie/Bob Mayer fame, although my friends tell me they find it strange that I have a crush on him. Okay, so Anderson Cooper is okay, but Bob Mayer is not?

I seriously need to get out more!

On a bummer note, I did get my first rejection from an email query. I'm not going to let it get me down because it's Spring baby!

What Color Should Your Blog or Journal Be?

Your Blog Should Be Yellow

You're a cheerful, upbeat blogger who tends to make everyone laugh.
You are a great storyteller, and the first to post the latest funny link.
You're also friendly and welcoming to everyone who comments on your blog.
I stole this from Karen who got it from someone else. Gosh, I never thought that I would be thought of us an upbeat blogger but I'll take it.
In other news, my BFF, Bama Girl, has come up with a new product called Joysickles, which is a lollipop shaped like a...well, I'll leave it to your imagination what it's shaped like. Suffice it to say, that they will be a great hit at Bachelorette parties across the country!
Have a great weekend!

What Kind of Writer Are you?

You Should Be a Romance Novelist

You see the world as it should be, and this goes double for all matters of the heart.
You can find the romance in any situation, and you would make a talented romance story writer...
And while you may be a traditional romantic, you're just as likely to be drawn to quirky or dark love stories.
As long as it deals with infatuation, heartbreak, and soulmates - you could write it.
Wow, I guess I picked the write genre! LOL!

Query Fever

I'm writing this at 12:12 a.m. on Wednesday morning. I have just watched the worst version of The Ten Commandments ever with actors I really like for work, and I'm tired and I want to go home. Right now, I'm waiting to be edited. So in the meantime, I'd share with you all, that I just sent out three email queries on Crazy Little Thing Called Love. And I'm very excited. My baby is ready to go out the door. By next week, I hope to have sent out another 7 queries.

I have a top ten list of agents that I start with, and then as the rejections pile up, I start on the next ten. I'm hoping that this time, I won't have to start on the next top on my list.

In the meantime, I've started working on my next YA project which I have to have the first 3 chapters to an agent by hopefully the end of next week, which may be wildly optimistic, but I like having a deadline. This is the part that I like, the sending of the queries, and keeping my fingers crossed that I get asked to send a partial or even the whole manuscript.

Speaking of Crazy Little Thing Called Love, the American Idol episode tonight where everyone sang Queen songs, wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Everyone seemed to find a song that suited their voice, including MY Taylor who sang Crazy Little Thing Called Love. MY Chris unfortunately sang a song that Queen had never done live. I have to agree with Simon that the reason had to be that the song sucked. He sang it well, but I would have liked to have seen him choose something the audience was a little more familiar with.

New York, New York

Well, I'm back from NEC in one piece. Had a great time getting to see old friends, making new friends, bonding with my RWA NYC chapter friends, and oh, yeah pitching. Yes, I pitched to two agents who will not be named in this blog, and I have to send a partial of Crazy Little Thing Called Love, and my latest insane idea called The Best Christmas Pageant Ever! Yikes! I'm excited but gut wrenchingly nervous about sending out my babies into the cruel, wide world.

I also had a crush on Bob Mayer, the co-author with Jennifer Crusie of Don't Look Down until he a) ruined A History of Violence for me before I'd seen it, and b) revealed on the Don't Look Down blog that he's in a significant relationship. Damn it! Foiled again! I also bought books (of course), and a won some books as well. Who knew my birthday was the day after National Literacy Day?

I also had a potential disaster. My good friend Marley accidentally stepped on my glasses, but here is the fabolous part. She went out and replaced my glasses, even though it was partly my fault for being careless and not putting my glasses back in their case. Isn't that the sweetest thing ever? I'm totally buying multi-copies of her books when they come out in 2008. And I also have a special surprise for her to say thank you. Shh! It's a secret!

One of the things I love about conferences, is staying in a hotel. Having some else make my bed, clean the tub is one of the perks. And I have to say the Crowne Plaza in Natick was a lovely hotel. My room was huge, and they give you lavender spray for the bed, ear plugs, eye mask, and a Sleep CD. I tried to take the CD player but I couldn't fit in it my bag! LOL!

Oh, and I went to workshops when I wasn't drinking in the bar. Truthfully conferences for me are now about meeting up with friends, pitching, and less about the actual craft of writing, although there was a great workshop on Writing the YA novel, and also Jenny Crusie's workshops.

Now it's back to the grindstone!

Thursday, April 06, 2006

Weekend in New England

In approximately fifteen hours, I will be off to the NEC Conference in Natick. I cannot tell you how excited I am. Not only because I'll be pitching my YA to one of my top ten agents, but also because Jennifer Crusie will be there! Hurrah! I'll also be able to celebrate in person with my good friend Marley Gibson. As you know, Marley recently signed a four book contract with Puffin books, so much champagne must be drunk to celebrate.

I'm also looking forward to not having to work tomorrow. I've been working non-stop on at least 3 jobs since January and I need a break. Although I just found out that I'm off next Friday for Good Friday, so 2 four day weeks in a row is not bad.

I just spent the past week getting my partial in the best shape possible. This has necessitated going over the pages with a fine tooth comb eliminating any extraneous baggage. I have a tendency to be verbose, and this book is challenging me to keep it tight. It's also the shortest book I've ever written, so far clocking in at 278 pages, which I think is good for a YA.

We're taking off at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, so I'll need to get up bright and early to finish packing. Then it's an influx of coffee, and food for the four hour drive upstate.

So wish me luck!

April Writer's Horoscope

Okay, it's official, I'm completely fried. I had to watch the pilot of Pepper Dennis last night, the new WB series, starring Rebecca Romajin, who I used to like until she broke with John Stamos and now I have no use for her. It doesn't help that the show totally sucks. It takes the same plot as Grey's Anatomy but set's in a Chicago news station. Like Meredith Gray, Pepper meets a guy in a bar, has sex with him, and then finds out he was hired for the anchor job she wanted. Of course, she tells Charlie they can't have a relationship because they work together, but you know as fast as you can say Katie Couric, they'll be hitting the sheets.

I made the mistake of taking the subway home instead of a cab after I got done at midnight. It took me almost two hours to get home, thanks to the N/R train also known as the Never Ready.

So I'm giving you my April Writer's Horoscope, thanks to Julie Hill of Hill Media over at Publisher's Marketplace:

Libra: A chance meeting can make a huge difference in your happiness level. Take your work to the local coffee place and see what happens. ( and let me know, hillagent@aol.com) If you get to go out of the country, you won't have to learn the language to meet someone who can change your life. Above all, be social. Get out there and see what the Universe has in store!

Scorpio: This is Scorpios' lucky year. You'll look back on 2006 as the year that lots of nice things happened both personally and at the office. Therefore, it is best not to take a backseat in any changes you want made. Writers should ask for the Moon, and log all their ideas for future use. Only drawback: you may be wordier this year than you need to be. Edit down.

I'm a Scorpio with Libra Rising, Libra Moon, and Venus in Libra so I always read the Libra horoscope as well as Scorpio every month.

Love, Love, my horoscope this month. Funny before I read this, I was already editing down the YA. Cut 15 pages in the past two days!

Addendum to Reel vs. Reality

These are the pictures that I was talking about in my earlier post:

Okay, here is Crown Prince Frederik with Crown Princess Mary on their wedding day.

And these are their fictional counterparts. Don't even get me started on how they kept calling Paige Crown Queen, even though a) they were not married yet and b) they didn't have a coronation.

Reel vs. Reality

Okay, blogger is really giving me fits today with uploading pictures. I had planned on comparing a picture of the real Crown Prince and Princess of Denmark with their fictional counterparts in The Prince and Me 2: Royal Wedding.

I love reading about Royalty. I know that as a citizen of a democratic country where we threw off the shackles of the monarchy over 200 years ago, I should poo-poo the idea of an antiquated system in a modern world, but I can't help it. I love the pomp and circumstance, the palaces, the weddings, the whole shebang. I devour Meg Cabot's Princess Diaries series and both Nicole Burnham's category series and her YA books. I have a collection of books on contemporary royalty and the past. I've read every book written about Princess Diana, Princess Grace and Monaco. I used to subscribe to Royalty and Majesty.

So when I saw The Prince and Me on DVD at the library, I had to check it out. The premise is as old as time, young, modern American woman falls in love with a guy, and then finds out he's the heir to the throne of Denmark. Just up my alley. They even added the twist of having Paige not wanting to give up her ambition of being a doctor, and having Prince Edvard be incredibly understanding. Unfortunately the execution fell far short of the idea. For one thing, Julia Stiles has got to be one of the most charmless actresses on the planet, and the actor who played the Prince was not exactly Prince Charming. There were some things that I did like, they delved into how hard it was to suddenly find yourself having to deal with traditions that didn't seem to make sense, the tabloids, and feeling constrained by the role Paige was having to take on.

To top it all off, Denmark actually does have a monarchy. While I was watching the movie, I had to wonder if the screenwriter was aware of that fact. It would have made more sense to create a fictional country the way Meg Cabot did with Genovia instead of using a real country. Maybe the screenwriter figured no one in America would realize that Denmark indeed has a Queen (no King at this moment, although her husband Prince Henrik is the royal consort like Prince Philip is to Queen Elizabeth). In fact Europe has three reigning Queens at the moment, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, Queen Margarethe II of Denmark, and Queen Elizabeth.

What was really funny about this movie was at the time it came out the real heir to the Danish throne, Prince Frederik was about to marry an Australian commoner, Mary Donaldson. His brother Joachim had already been married and seperated from a British commoner, HH Princess Alexandra. 20/20 even interviewed the Crown Prince and asked him what he thought of the movie (for the record he thought it was amusing).

So, why did I rent The Prince and Me 2: Royal Wedding? Well, who isn't a sucker for weddings. Even though Julia Stiles wasn't in this one, nor really anyone from the first movie, apart from the actor playing the Prince, I watched it. God, it was bad. The plot involved a Prince of Norway trying to get the Prince to marry his daughter using some obscure law from the 13th century. Again, the screenwriters were blowing smoke out of their arse. For one thing, Denmark has the oldest monarchy in Europe, and it's one of the more modern monarchies.

Of course, it all became about how Princess Kirsten of Norway, who used to be fat, but now was slim and gorgeous, tries to undermine Paige, so that she gives up and dumps Edvard. Frankly she should have dumped Edvard for being dull, like this movie. But don't you know I watched it till the bitter end! Even though I wanted to take Kam Heskins (who played Paige and also played Elizabeth in the Mormon version of Pride and Prejudice) to a salon to get rid of those god awful spaniel curls she was wearing.

So if you're a royalty loving freak like me, watch Roman Holiday (the Audrey Hepburn version) or The Princess Diaries (the first one) and avoid the Prince and Me like the plague.

Things I just don't understand

I live in New York, so I see alot of crazy things on any given day, and I have no problem with what people do in their private time, as long as it doesn't have involve animals and small children, but I'm mystified by what people do to their bodies. I'm not talking plastic surgery although if you've ever seen pictures of Jocelyn Wildenstein aka Jocelyn Wildebeest, you'd know what I mean.

If you want to blow your boobs up until they look like you're carrying around large helium balloons on your chest, or change your nose etc. No prob. I just don't get people who tattoo their bodies so that you can't even seen their flesh anymore of you have multiple body piercings. A nose stud, a hoop in your eyebrow or even a tongue stud, okay, I can see that.

However, today I saw something that totally freaked me out. I was sitting on the subway minding my own business reading the Mary Jane Clark novel I bought yesterday when she came to speak to our chapter, when I looked up and saw this guy with two horns coming out of the flesh under his lips. I'm talking two silver studs that looked like horns jutting out from the fleshy part under your lip where guys usually have that soul patch of hair.

I wish I had a camera phone or something so that I could show you exactly what it looked like.

I couldn't stop looking at it. All I could think of was who would want to kiss this guy with those little horn thingies sticking out. I mean most women have experience razor burn from their guys stubble, but most of us haven't been pierced by weird objects on our boyfriend's faces. It just has to hurt. It hurt just thinking about it.

Even if this guy was gay, and it can't be a treat. Jake Gyllenhaal was interviewed about kissing Heath Ledger and he said that he now sympathized with women who have to deal with a guy's five o'clock shadow during a kiss.

Creepy, in fact it was creepier than the Mary Jane Clark novel I was reading, which by the way was very good. It was called Hide Yourself Away. I highly recommend it. The horn stud thing not so much.

I just have to assume that this guy was into some sort of S&M type thing, that's the only explanation I can come up with for it.

Single in the City - Frustrations Abound

It's no secret that I'm single and I don't want to be. The problem right now is finding the time to pursue a relationship when I have 3 jobs, well actually 4 if you include writing. They say that you find the time for the things that are important in your life, and the things that are not, fall by the wayside. Well, for the past 2 years, finding a relationship has taken a back seat.

By now that I'm reaching a certain age, I'm more interested in finding someone. But it can be really frustrating in New York City.

Case in point: recently I found this web-site called 8 at 8 which is a singles dining club. 4 men and 4 women have dinner at one of New York's hundreds of great restaurants. Sounds cool right. Much easier than having to troll Match.com or PerfectMatch.com which is a full-time job in itself. So I sent in an application, indicating that I was 41. I get an email on Tuesday telling me that instead of taking my money, they wanted to let me know that there weren't that many men in their forties who join.

Well, fine, but what makes them think that I'm interested in meeting men who are forty or older? Frankly I would much prefer to find a younger man at this point in my life! I felt kind of discriminated against if you want to know the truth. I probably have more in common with men in their early to mid-thirties than I would with a guy who is my age or older, divorced with kids, probably settled in his ways, maybe not even looking to have more kids.

I was so pissed off that I fired off a letter to 8 at 8 letting them know just what I thought of them!

So it's back to looking for other interesting ways of meeting men in NY that doesn't include hanging out in bars. At this point I'm seriously considering putting my picture on JDate or doing that Just Lunch that keeps advertising in New York magazine.
